Hope – A Strong and Confident Expectation that God is True – Part 1

HOPE
Part I

by Pastor Paul Tilley – Sunday May 3, 2020

Hope in things that surround me, can bring distractions
Hope in people wanting to control me, can bring disappointments
Hope in myself, can bring devastation
Hope in Christ, can bring deliverance

I have found myself singing this song often this week:
All my hope is in Jesus
Thank God, my yesterday’s gone
All my sins are forgiven
I ain’t the same, a prodigal returned.

Psalm 39:7 New Living Translation (NLT)
7 And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?
    My only hope is in you.

An optimistic state of mind (a feeling) that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one’s life or the world at large.

There are many key terms and concepts in Scripture like faith, hope, love, joy, grace, peace, pleasing the Lord, etc. that we come across as we read our Bibles, but often these are just vague concepts for many people.

A Definition of Hope from Society
It is a wishy washy maybe or a kind of unsure optimism.
Societies idea of hope is “to wish for, to expect, but without certainty of the fulfillment. It is to desire very much, but with no real assurance of getting your desire.”

In Scripture, according to the Hebrew and Greek words translated by the word “hope” and according to the biblical usage, hope is an indication of certainty.

“Hope” in Scripture means “a strong and confident expectation.”

Romans 8:24-25 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees?
25 But if we hope (a strong and confident expectation) for what we do not see, with perseverance (persistence, determination, insistence, resolution, tenacity, purpose) we wait eagerly for it.

There somethings in life you just know that you know. The Bible says in Romans 1:17 …the just shall live by faith.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope (a strong and confident expectation) and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 | NIV |

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope (a strong and confident expectation) in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
Psalm 42:11 | NIV |

But those who hope (a strong and confident expectation) in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31 | NIV

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope (a strong and confident expectation) by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 | NIV

Now faith is confidence in what we hope (a strong and confident expectation) for and assurance about what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1 | NIV |
You are my refuge and my shield;
I have put my hope (a strong and confident expectation) in your word.
Psalm 119:114 | NIV

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope (a strong and confident) expectation we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
Hebrews 10:23 | NIV

Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope (a strong and confident expectation) in the Lord.
Psalm 31:24 | NIV

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope (a strong and confident expectation) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3 | NIV

Remember, societies perspective of hope, is a wishy-washy, unsure optimism. Society wishes for something without any certainty of getting fulfilled.

As we have been facing the storms head on (virus, jobless, shut down, locked down at home, controlled by governor’s agenda, Governor Newsome’s statement of no church open till the fall, churches are not essential) and the list can go on.

We need to be confident of what our hope is and where our hope is placed.

I recall a man named Pharaoh whom Moses had to deal with concerning the shut down and lock down of God’s people. I am just saying, that did not end well for Pharaoh. I am not prophesying something or hoping for something bad , but I am looking for something good because I know in whom my hope is placed.

There is a stirring that is taking place in the hearts of God’s people. I intend to be one of them that stands back and watches the hand of mighty God who is still in charge move to accomplish the things He determines to do.

I Would Not Be Denied
When pangs of death seized on my soul,
Unto the Lord I cried;
Till Jesus came and made me whole,
I would not be denied.

Refrain:
I would not be denied,
I would not be denied,
Till Jesus came and made me whole,
I would not be denied.

Old Satan said my Lord was gone
And would not hear my prayer;
But praise the Lord, the work is done,
And Christ the Lord is here.

In summary, from God’s perspective, hope is the confident expectation, the sure certainty that what God has promised in the Word is true, has occurred, and or will in accordance with God’s sure Word.

When we declare all my hope is in Jesus, we are investing our hope with confidence of sure certainty that God has everything pertaining to our lives under control.
