The Rewards of Hope in Perilous Times – Part 3

Hope in things that surround me, can bring distractions
Hope in people wanting to control me, can bring disappointments
Hope in myself, can bring devastation

Hope in Christ, can bring deliverance

Part I
A Definition of Hope from society
It is a wishy washy maybe or a kind of unsure optimism.
A Definition of Hope from God’s perspective
Hope is the confident expectation, the sure certainty that what God has promised in the Word is true, has occurred, and or will in accordance with God’s sure Word.

Part II
A Description of Hope
Hope IS DYNAMIC OR ACTIVE
In the Bible, hope is never a passive (lifeless) thing. It is dynamic, active, directive, vibrant and life sustaining.
Hope HAS RESULTS
(1) Hope changes how we see ourselves.
(2) It changes what we value.
(3) It affects what we do with our lives—our talents, time, treasures.

Part III
Hope HAS REWARDS AND BLESSINGS
(1) Hope gives us joy and peace.
Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 5:2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

(2) Hope gives us protection.
Psalm 33:18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness,

(3) Hope gives us strength, courage, boldness.
Psalm 31:24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the LORD.

(4) Hope gives us confidence in ministry.
1 Timothy 4:10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.

WHERE AND HOW DO WE GET HOPE?
NEGATIVE–WARNINGS REGARDING FALSE HOPE

There are several warnings in Scripture against putting our hope in anything other than the Lord because these things will leave us ashamed, frustrated, disappointed, and in ruin.

Proverbs 10:28 The hope of the righteous is gladness, But the expectation of the wicked perishes.

God’s children have hope
The world only has expectation

God is called “the God of Hope.” This means He is the source of all real hope. If we are going to have hope (confident expectation), it must come from Him for He alone has the power to give it.
Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.

Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 2:12 …remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

1 Timothy 1:1-2 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope; 2 to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

(1) Hope depends on knowing the Word of God.
The greatest treasure we have on this earth is the Word of God. I would be lost without the comfort and encouragement I find in His Word.
“When the world all around me is sinking sand, on Christ that solid rock I stand.”

Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Colossians 1:5-6 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth;

(2) Hope depends on knowing and resting in God’s Grace.
2 Thessalonians 2:16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,

(3) Hope depends on the Spirit Filled life.
Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Remember.
God’s children have hope
The world only has expectation

Hope is the confident expectation, the sure certainty that what God has promised in the Word is true, has occurred, and or will in accordance with God’s sure Word.

New Living Translation (Acts 17:28)
For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

We are dwelling in perilous times. I never imagined in my lifetime a place of worship would be asked to shut down for close to a three-month period. This past week I received reports of suicide hot lines being jammed with callers in our community. Police responding to domestic violence calls in far greater numbers than before. All because of hopelessness. Troubling that the one place people should be able to turn to for hope in our communities is considered, non-essential and are closed. That is a description of perilous.

A reset in the Kingdom of God is taking place.

I believe as this time passes, and it will pass, people will once again realize the importance of God in their lives as well as the importance of the local church. Change for the good is coming. Do not lose hope.

Don’t let go of your hope in God!
